Related ArticlesThyroglobulin is the glycoprotein precursor of the iodinated thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Thyroglobulin is obtained from the thyroid gland and exhibits the general properties of the globulins. The human thyroglobulin (hTG) is a high molecular weight glycoprotein (605 kDa) found in the thyroid follicular cells. It plays a central role in the uptake, incorporation, and regulated biosynthesis of thyroid hormones, T4 and T3. Thyroid disorders are, in large part, du
The cJun proto-oncogene was first identified as the cellular homolog of the avian sarcoma virus vjun oncogene. JunB and JunD have been shown to be almost identical to cJun in their C terminal regions, which are involved in dimerization and DNA binding, whereas their N terminal domains, which are involved in transcriptional activation, diverge. JunB is a transcription factor involved in regulating gene activity following the primary growth factor response. It binds to the DNA sequence 5'-TGA[
This gene encodes the medium-chain specific (C4 to C12 straight chain) acyl-Coenzyme A dehydrogenase. The homotetramer enzyme catalyzes the initial step of the mitochondrial fatty acid beta-oxidation pathway. Defects in this gene cause medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency, a disease characterized by hepatic dysfunction, fasting hypoglycemia, and encephalopathy, which can result in infantile death. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found f
The protein encoded by this gene is a transmembrane glycoprotein that is a member of the protein kinase superfamily. This protein is a receptor for members of the epidermal growth factor family. EGFR is a cell surface protein that binds to epidermal growth factor. Binding of the protein to a ligand induces receptor dimerization and tyrosine autophosphorylation and leads to cell proliferation. Mutations in this gene are associated with lung cancer. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript var
Cyclin E is a regulatory subunit of Cdk2 and controls G1 / S transition during the mammalian cell cycle. Multiple isoforms of Cyclin E are only expressed in tumors but not in normal tissue, suggesting a post transcriptional regulation of Cyclin E. In vitro analyses indicated that these truncated variant isoforms of Cyclin E are able to phosphorylate histone H1. Alterations in the Cyclin E protein have been implicated as indicators of worse prognosis in various cancers.
The protein encoded by this gene is a multifunctional, nuclear phosphoprotein that plays a role in cell cycle progression, apoptosis and cellular transformation. It functions as a transcription factor that regulates transcription of specific target genes. Mutations, overexpression, rearrangement and translocation of this gene have been associated with a variety of hematopoietic tumors, leukemias and lymphomas, including Burkitt lymphoma. There is evidence to show that alternative translation
